Pope Leo XIV delivered this homily during the Missa Pro Ecclesia—his first as Supreme Pontiff—celebrated with the College of Cardinals in the Sistine Chapel on May 9.
I love his emphasis on being “friends of Jesus” and using that to send us into mission. I hope he will lead all Catholics to a greater discipleship and intimacy with the Lord!
“Today, too, there are many settings in which Jesus, although appreciated as a man, is reduced to a kind of charismatic leader or superman. This is true not only among non-believers but also among many baptized Christians, who thus end up living, at this level, in a state of practical atheism.”
Incredibly well said, and something many of us in the Protestant mainline should meditate on.
This is beautiful. His conclusion where he says this burden, this duty, this Christ-calling is being said to himself first, and in trading on his role he sees himself as prepared to not only do so but expecting the modem world to reject him like Christ was. Amazing attitude. Quoting GES and LG and Ignatius! Nice
I'm impressed! As a great admirer of Pope Benedict XVI, I was skeptical of Leo XIV's depth of formation in Scripture and Tradition. Also, in his ability to translate a solid formation into language that anyone can understand. He certainly did just that in his first Homily.
People are blackpilling about having “another liberal Pope”, but the fact that His Holiness cares about spreading the Gospel and Faith is a big deal: I highly doubt that Pope Leo XIV considers it wrong to proselytise.
May the Lord preserve him, give him a long life, make him blessed upon the earth, and may the Lord not hand him over to the power of his enemies.
May your hand be upon your holy servant.
And upon your son whom you have anointed.
Let us pray.
O God, the Pastor and Ruler of all the faithful, look down, in your mercy, upon your servant, Leo, whom you have appointed to preside over your Church; and grant, we beseech you, that both by word and example, he may edify all those under his charge; so that, with the flock entrusted to him, he may arrive at length unto life everlasting.
"Even today, there are many settings in which the Christian faith is considered absurd, meant for the weak and unintelligent. Settings where other securities are preferred, like technology, money, success, power, or pleasure."
I immediately think of my time living in Silicon Valley and working in big tech. Most of the employees of tech companies there are not Christians and I can only assume much of the decisions are not made through the lens of faith. There are many ministries in that area attempting to spread the gospel within the tech companies. It's a world centered around tech, money, success, power, and definitely pleasure. I 100% agree that these should be areas of focus for the Church if we want to see cultural changes at a global scale.
Thank you! I’ve been looking for a typed up version to take to prayer and meditate on- so much food here!
How do you print, but excluding pictures?
Awesome, having the focus on Jesus.
What unity Pope Leo brings to the world.
Have felt so lost in the last decade.
We have a compass now, follow Jesus.

That alone is a major W.
Nothing about making a mess, climate change, it was a beautiful homily!
Let us pray for Leo, the Pope.

Through Christ our Lord.
His scholarship shines through. I’m liking il Papa. Thanks for sharing.
Sincere thanks. I have trouble comprehending sometimes with just listening.
What an absolute luxury to have a papal homily given directly in our language. I'm honestly really moved by that aspect of it too.
Thank you, Matt.

Thankyou for this Matt
Beautiful
His emphasis on martyrdom was quite eye-opening.

I’ve written this before the Conclave was over. There’s still time, maybe:
